The Sharp Edge of the Knife

The thought of the sharp edge is something that we strongly believe in. Whether it is for us as individuals or for the organisation and products it is to ensure that we are able to position ourselves as niche, but how and at what cost ? That’s the real question.

Have you ever wondered that the part of the knife that actually cuts so fine is so small a part of the whole that if we were to buy only that, probably it would cost you a percentage of the overall cost of the knife? But we can’t just use the edge without the whole knife. The rest of the knife is big and oddly shaped and heavy, and I can relate that finesse and oddness to everyone and myself. That’s how and what we are. The smallest part of our being, the only thing of value, the rest is just odd and unwanted.

Do we all not do the same where we keep on sharpening a skill, neglecting the rest to have that edge over others? We want to be the best among the rest and then feel superior to them, a simple belief that my edge is sharper than others. This is the edge that cuts so many relations as we pave our road ahead, just sharpening to reach that level of sharpness that can slice through anything, many times something very close to us.

I had tears in my eyes as I was cutting through the onions to make a Mediterranean dish, as the sharpened blade sliced through my index finger giving me a deep cut. Suddenly the pain made the blood visible, and at that point in time, I was not sure if I really should have used such a sharp knife. Like that edge caused the pain and the blood was a post-reflection of the sharpness, maybe at times we just need to like blunt knife which takes time to cut.

As I stopped cutting the onion to attend to my wound, I realized that so many times we do this to attend to things we have missed out in our pace for that edge. To date, all that I can remember is that I always wanted that edge over others. Running was a part of my schedule to keep ahead of everyone, just polish and sharpen my knowledge on whatever I would lay my hand on….just so much of edge. But things had changed in the recent past, my life was more of the blunt side of the knife now, rarely showing off the edge of sharpness I carry or once carried.

I have started using the whole of the knife now… respecting from a distance…The Sharp Edge of the Knife.
